How To Identify Fireweed
Fireweed is easily identified by the tall, erect, bright purple flowers that grow on spikes at the top of the stem. The purple flowers can be seen in fields and meadows from far away, giving the surrounding landscapes a splash of colour. Here's a more detailed breakdown of the identifying characteristics of fireweed:
- Leaves - narrow, lance shaped leaves alternate along the stem. Underside of leaves have a light coloured midrib
- Flowers - beautiful purple to pink flowers that have four petals are attached to the stem from a tube-like structure, upwards of 50+ flowers per stem
- Seed pods - after flowering, fireweed produces long, slender seed pods that split open to release fluffy white seeds
- Habitat - fireweed can be found in many growing conditions from roadsides and riverbanks to meadows and mountains
- Structure - fireweed grows from a central stalk that bears the leaves and flowers and can grow up to 8 feet tall!

Fireweed seed pods can harbour up to 80,000 seeds in them! This is one of the many reasons why fireweed can quickly colonize disturbed areas.
